Veteran's Day Observance

by: Hannah Albers

Germantown Elementary observed Veteran’s Day on November 10th with an all-school assembly. Students in grades Pre-K through grade 8 were decked out in red, white, and blue. Eighteen local veterans attended. Brenden Tonnies, David Foppe, and Kevin Albers played the drums as the Joe Langenhorst and some fellow veterans posted the colors. Special guests, Fr. Buester and Rich Bagby said a few words and led the students in the Pledge of Allegiance. Superintendent, Mr. Weber, thanked everyone for coming and thanked the veterans. The principal, Mrs. Zurliene, spoke about what a veteran is, proper respect, and the important symbolism behind the American flag. Frank Leonard, commander of the Germantown Legion, asked all the veterans to share what branch of the military they served in and their years in service. Tony Parr, a veteran and teacher at Germantown, was invited to speak about his military service. Ben Koch explained the meaning behind each fold of when the flag is folded. Three junior high students, Blake Beckmann, Claire Langenhorst, and Jessica Becker were asked to read their essays on Veteran’s Day. A video tribute called, “God Bless the USA” sung by Lee Greenwood, was played while everyone sung along. In closing, Maggie Fields, Lexi Hemker, Ben Lampe, Quinton Huelsmann, Olivia Thiesing, and Brianne Hellmann played the taps while everyone paused in silence to remember all those that have gone before us. The veterans marched out on that solemn note. Germantown would like to thank anyone who helped in planning this special assembly.
